I was lucky enough to land an internship for the Spring semester, at a great organization in Oklahoma City. Although, nervous about the experience I put myself out there to get the most of the internship. Through the experience I met Megan McGuire, which is why I chose to interview her.
Megan currently works for the Oklahoma City All Sports Association in Oklahoma City. I think what impresses me the most about Megan is how she is not much more than a few months older than me, but I actually look up to her. She has become successful at a young age, and landed a job that many people would dream of. Megan is the Public Relations and Event Specialist for All Sports.
Megan graduated from Oklahoma State University in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a minor in Speech Communication. She accredits being very involved with campus activities and her sorority Gamma Phi Beta for her success.
“Being involved keeps you up to date with everything going on, and leads you to greater opportunities through the people you meet,” Megan said. “Experiences through planning all the different events that OSU holds prepared me to coordinate events on a larger scale.”
All Sports is a nonprofit organization that creates, pursues, promotes, hosts, executes and secures quality athletic competitions in the state of Oklahoma. Some events that are occurring during the Spring that Megan will play a large role in are the Men’s and Women’s Big 12 Basketball Championship, NCAA Women’s Regional, Big 12 Softball and Baseball Championship, as well as the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
“It’s a lot of work to coordinate all the events we put on. It takes a lot of time and dedication to pull of a successful event of that magnitude,” Megan said.
Megan’s advice to being successful in the Public Relations field, and the sports industry is to work hard, and be prepared for everything. The trick to being successful is to be flexible and willing to work with anyone or anything that is thrown your way.

This is really intersting. I have heard a little about the All City Sports Association and even volunteered for one of there events last year. It is a great organization and does so many great things for the Oklahoma City Area. Congratulations on getting to work with them for the semester.
I wish I would have known about the All City Sports Association before now. I think that the fact that Megan is not that much older than us and that she just graduated from college a year ago, proves that there are PR Practioners out there who are successful, they just have to put in that extra hour of work to obtain their success. After reading this blog, I am more motivated and eager to pursue my dreams as a PR sports publicist, of some sort. Good luck with everything Natalie!
Natalie, it sounds like you had a fantastic opportunity to work at a really great place. I had actually heard about this company before, but I wasn't completely sure what they did. I too had an internship at an event planning company and found it was very valuable to learn "the ways" from those who have been in the event planning industry for a while.
That sounds like a great internship. I heard about All Sports once, they came to the Journalism Career Fair. It is really comforting to know that people that just graduated a short time before us are finding great jobs, especially in the PR sports. I had an internship last year doing event planning and Megan is definitely right. Being flexible is key to being a successful event planner.
Natalie I thought your post was really interesting! I have worked at some of these events but I still didn't know a lot about the organization. It's exciting how many different events you all get to work and I can't imagine planning all of those!
I followed your link and read about the Oklahoma City All Sports Association and it seems pretty cool! I like their about me section which includes a blurb about promoting sports as family entertainment and an economic boost to the city. I guess I usually think of high-dollar figures when I think of big time sports tournaments so it’s refreshing to see the non-profit, community support driven side of the sports world also. Glad to know it’s not all just about business/money and the fun is still there.
